Night of Augury

This is my very last night photo shot in 2016 and was taken on Dec 31. I was surprised by a brief aurora display when I arrived at Abraham Lake around 5:30am. Abraham Lake in Alberta has become famous due to the methane bubbles that freeze in the ice. Plants on the lake bottom release methane gas which then gets trapped in layers and in the most fascinating geometries. This photo was taken looking south east/south with the aurora lighting up the landscape and clouds with green. I filled in the foreground with a bit of light from an LED panel. Jupiter and Spica are the brightest points above the mountain ranges.
It was interesting walking around the frozen lake by myself listening to the ice crack and settle.
