How a Photographer Continues to Find Himself Through the Camera

For some of us, photography is a job that we love, and for some of us, it's a window into our very being that can help us discover or rediscover who we are. This touching video features one photographer who uses the craft to learn about himself and heal.

KC Loves made this wonderful feature on Travis Young, a Kansas City photographer who uses his craft to rediscover himself after a horrific childhood and a resulting depression and two suicide attempts. Young shoots film that he then develops in his apartment, and he uses the process to understand what emotions he was feeling in the moment and to discover what moves him. As Young refers to his process: "[I'm] trying to translate that process of just simply feeling, simply being alive, simply being here, simply participating in this thing that I've recently come to understand as my own life..." His photos are striking, and the story behind why he takes them is even more so. It's incredible the journey he's gone on through photography. I highly recommend you take eight minutes to watch his story above.

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
